2012 Colorado Innovation Network Summit

In November 2011, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper introduced the Colorado Innovation Network (COIN), a public, private and academic initiative to stimulate economic growth, help create jobs and attract new businesses by focusing on innovation.

The goal of COIN is to connect innovation leaders and inventors through forums and solutions that will allow them to foster innovation and enhance their own networks. By bringing people together, Colorado hopes to get conversations started, and in the summer of 2012, COIN hosted the inaugural COIN Summit. The invitation-only event included leaders in business, academia, government and non-profits to collaborate and develop solutions for Colorado's greatest innovation challenges.

Showcase Innovation Possibilities

As part of the Summit, COIN wanted to showcase innovation possibilities, be more environmentally conscious and go paperless. To help accomplish these objectives, as well as provide an innovative way to facilitate delegate networking and communications, COIN decided to create a mobile app. After researching five app companies, COIN partnered with QuickMobile, in large part because of an app QuickMobile developed specifically for the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"We were looking for an easy organized way for our delegates to receive summit information such as schedule, speaker bios and attendee information," said Kelly Underell, Deputy Program Director for COIN. "Our entire focus is on innovation, and we selected QuickMobile because it has the track record and we were confident, based on what we saw in the WEF app, that QuickMobile would be successful in helping our inaugural innovation event showcase our own innovative capabilities."

Updates on the Fly

The mobile app was designed to look and feel like the rest of the event brand and materials, and delegates were invited to download the multi-platform app via email after registering for the Summit. Built on QuickMobile's advanced content management system, Summit organizers had the flexibility to share and update information in real-time. In fact, COIN completed four major data updates to the event information leading up to opening night, and had 4-6 updates daily.

Underell added, "In event planning, things are constantly changing. In fact, we lost a speaker at the last minute. The QuickMobile platform provided us the flexibility we needed to make sure the information we shared with delegates was always correct and up-to-date. This was critical to our success. The tailoring of the app to our event is what allowed us to be the most successful with the tool."

The updates did not stop after the event. Months after the Summit, COIN continued to upload videos, presentations and photos from the event, and would hear from delegates who were using the app and still tuning in for updates.

Success, Sustainability and Savings

Critical to any event app success is ensuring that attendees use it. Of the 250 delegates invited to the event, more than 230 of them downloaded the app to their mobile devices. Delegates appreciated that the app was easy to use and that the event organization and information was right at their fingertips. They also valued the "green" aspect of the app and the fact that COIN did not print something that would have been thrown out immediately following the event.

"COIN brought together a high-level delegation that wants things to be efficient and not waste time and resources, and this app helped make their time more valuable," commented Underell.

The mobile app also eliminated the need for COIN to hire a designer or pay for printing, and is more valuable than a printed guide because it could be quickly and easily updated with current information.

"The app was never wrong," said Underell. "The fact that it can be ever-changing is important in keeping pace with a fast moving event. And the delegates loved the addition and made the event more engaging for them."

Future Plans with Mobile

With the inaugural event behind them, COIN is already planning how to improve the mobile experience for its attendees.

"Next year, we will release the app much sooner, and in addition to fully leveraging our current features, we also plan to use other tools, including live polling. QuickMobile delivered a tailored and innovative solution that allowed us to connect with our delegates in an efficient way and be successful," concluded Underell. "The technology is easy to use and update, and the proactive support we received from QuickMobile is what we valued the most from our mobile partner."
